The Benefits of Bamboo Charcoal...and why we use it in our nappies
There are so many benefits of using Bamboo Charcoal. But before we tell you what these are let’s begin by explaining what exactly it is.
Bamboo charcoal comes from pieces of bamboo plants, harvested after at least five years, and burned in ovens at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1200 °C. It benefits environmental protection by reducing pollutant residue. It is an environmentally functional material featuring excellent absorption properties.
To start with, bamboo fabrics are considered the most sustainable eco fabrics around; being that it’s the fastest growing plant on earth, and its antibacterial properties mean plantations require very little, if any, nasty chemicals like pesticides.
Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, deodorising and hypo-allergenic; which makes it perfect for modern cloth nappy lining and inserts. Its anti-bacterial qualities come from a bacteriostatic agent unique to bamboo plants called Bamboo Kun, which also helps bamboo resist harbouring odours.
Its natural deodorising qualities is perfect for people with skin sensitivities due to the lack of chemicals in the production process.
Bamboo charcoal is also easy to wash and can be dried in a clothes dryer or hung on a clothes line for maximum bacteria control and freshness. It is highly absorbent and can wick moisture away from the body faster than cotton, making it ideal for cloth nappies, helping to keep your little ones bottom dry.
The structure of the bamboo fibres mean its softer, more breathable and thermal regulating then some other fabrics such as wool or synthetic fabrics, helping your little one to stay cool in the summer and warn in the winter.
Another reason we find bamboo charcoal great for cloth nappies is that it’s extremely durable. It’s able to withstand hundreds of washes, eliminating the need of spending thousands of dollars on disposable products that do the same job. Our bamboo charcoal nappies, if cared for and following our nappy guide, can last all the way from birth up to toilet training, or about 3 years. This can easy save the average household about $750+ a year compared to disposable products.
